I offer a lot of advice in my posts on this Substack. But that does not mean that I myself faithfully abide by whatever wisdom my advice may contain.
I do not perfectly practice what I preach.
In fact, much of what I preach are practices that I myself currently need most to remedy my own deficiencies. My advice is primarily addressed to myself.
Why do I publish my self-advice instead of just writing it in a private journal?
First and foremost, I believe that writing to be read by others is an important learning exercise. Striving to clearly articulate an idea is a powerful way to better understand that idea yourself. And you have only truly mastered a subject to the extent that you can effectively explain it to others. Your comprehensibility is a measure of your comprehension.
Through writing these posts, I am trying to better understand and live up to the truths I am gleaning from my readings and reflections.
Secondly, I believe “learning out loud” is a powerful way to teach (arguably the only way to teach). So I document and share my quest for self-improvement in case my experiments and epiphanies are useful to any readers who are at a similar stage on a similar quest.
A dear and admirable friend of mine recently shared one of my posts saying, “His writing is and has always been bread for the journey.”
Her compliment meant a lot to me, because that is exactly what I hope produce through my writing practice. If my efforts to sustain my own progress also provide, as a byproduct, sustenance for anyone else’s pilgrimage, I will be most pleased and grateful.
Totally agree with your anonymously quoted. Your writing is relatable bread. 🍞
